The photo illustrates Thomas Nast, the premier saterist and artist of the 1800's. Nast was responsible for the popular images of Santa Claus, Uncle Sam, the Republican Elephant, and the Democratic Donkey. Nast was an illustrator for Harper's Weekly during the Civil War.
