Here for your enjoyment is an absorbing photograph of Robert Smalls, S.C. M.C. Born in Beaufort, SC, April 1839. Robert was a southern Slave, used by his owners to pilot the Confederate Ship "Planter". In 1862, in the middle of the Civil War, Mr. Smalls organized a mutiny, stole the Planter, ran the blockade, and then turned the ship over to Northern authorities. Smalls was hailed as a National Hero, and was given prize money by the Congress and President Lincln. This photo was made in 1870.
