Lowe, Professor

Lowe, Professor T.S.C. (military balloonist)

You are looking at an educational picture of Lowe, Professor T.S.C. (military balloonist). It was taken in 1865.

Lowe was responsible for developing the first use of air power in war. During the Civil War, he deployed balloons for reconnaissance for the Union Army. The high vantage points of the balloons allowed Union strategists to better understand the position and movements of Rebel forces.

We have created this collection of pictures primarily to serve as an easy to access educational tool. Contact curator@old-picture.com.
