General James Longstreet

Longstreet, General James C.S.A. (not in uniform)

You are looking at an intriguing picture of Longstreet, General James C.S.A. (not in uniform). It was taken in 1865.

The picture presents Longstreet in civilian clothes at the close of the Civil War. As a Rebel Commander, Longstreet showed an aptitude for defensive engagements, preferring to position his men in strong entrenched positions and wait for the enemy to attack. Once the enemy had been thinned Longstreet would commence an offensive attack. In fact, troops under his leadership never lost a defensive position during the war. Lee referred to Longstreet affectionately as his Old War Horse.
