Worried Woman

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words.  Even with a thousand words, how do you describe the look in a Mother's eye who does not know how she will feed her children, or the look on the face of a paratrooper minutes before the D-day invasion.  The simple answer is that there are some stories that can only be told with pictures. This site is dedicated to those stories, and those pictures.

We have compiled a collection of thousands of the most important photographs of the last 150 years; pictures of our struggles, trials, and triumphs. We can only fully understand our history by gazing into the eyes of the people that made that history. Their eyes will tell a story that no words can.

Browse the images by Theme, or use the search tool to find a picture or period of interest.

We are committed to providing you with a safe and enjoyable browsing experience.  This site will always be free, and free of annoying popups, popunders and spyware. Check back often as we add new pictures each day

Taos Indian Man

This is a majestic photograph of a Taos Indian Man. The photograph was taken in 1905 by Edward Curtis.

The Indian's name is Iahla Willow. This man was an inhabitant of the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. The Taos Pueblo, sometimes referred to as "Pueblo de Taos" has been continuously inhabited for more than one thousand years. The community is situated one mile north of the modern town of Taos, New Mexico. The pueblo is currently inhabited by about 2000 people. In their native tongue, Northern Tiwa, the name of Taos is Tua-tah, which translated is "our village."

The Taos Indians lived in Adobe Homes made of mud bricks. The photograph at left is a majestic image of one of these proud Native Americans. The image captures the strength and dignity of these first Americans in a dramatic fashion.
