Portrait of Secretary of State William H. Seward

 

You are looking at an artistic picture of Secretary of State William H. Seward, officer of the United States government. Seward was attacked on the night Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Seward was attacked by Lewis Payne, one of the conspirators who hoped to kill a number of Government Officials, in addition to Lincoln. Lewis Payne attacked Seward with a knife. It was created between 1860 and 1865 by Brady National Photographic Art Gallery (Washington, D.C.).
