Washington DC Execution

Soldier springing the trap

 

Here for your perusal is a collectible photograph of Washington, D.C. It shows a man being hung in the shadow if the United States Capitol building. A soldier is springing the trap at the instant the picture is taken, sending the condemned man to his death; men in trees and Capitol dome beyond. The unfortunate subject of this execution was Captain Wirz, and he was executed for his treatment of Union Prisoners at the Andersonville Prison in the Civil War. It was created in 1865.
