You are looking at an exciting picture of Runaway Slaves on the Rappahannock River, Virginia. Fugitive Negroes are shown fording the Rappahannock. (During General Pope's retreat). It was created in 1862 by O'Sullivan, Timothy H., 1840-1882.

The picture presents United States during the Civil War . . . the run to freedom.
