Above we show a disturbing photo of Washington, D.C. The four condemned conspirators (Mrs. Surratt, Payne, Herold, Atzerodt), with officers and others on the scaffold; guards on the wall. The photograph was taken as the noose is being placed around the neck of one of the conspirators. It was made in 1865 by Gardner, Alexander, 1821-1882.

The illustration documents Washington, 1862-1865, the assassination of President Lincoln, April-July 1865. Photograph includes woman.
